Last updated: August 17th, 2023

The following are the USU Club Sports Eligibility Requirements published in the Club Sports Manual 2022-2023.

A student may not be a member of a Club Sport unless they have met the following guidelines. It is the responsibility of the team officers to ensure that any potential members and current members are aware of these criteria; Utah State University Academic Standing Policy

  1. All USU students participating in Club Sports must be registered for a minimum of 12 academic credits unless given the approval from Assistant Director of Competitive Sports.
  2. Graduate students are to be registered for at least six (6) credits.
  3. Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses.
  4. Ineligible players and non USU students are not allowed to travel or participate in any practices, games, or competitions.
  5. Ensure each club member is in good standing with Utah State University and the national governing body pertaining to the sports eligibility requirements. In some cases, students may be required to carry more credits and/or maintain higher GPA standards to be in compliance with national governing body guidelines.

The following player eligibility requirements align directly with the Utah State University Academic Standing Policy. Each club member must be in good academic standing with Utah State University and/or meet certain requirements to be eligible to participate on a club sport team.

Club Sport Warning (Academic Warning)

An undergraduate student with less than 36 attempted hours and with an institution GPA of less than 2.0 is placed on Club Sport warning (academic warning). Club Sport warning serves as a reminder that future semesters with a GPA below 2.0 could result in more serious consequences.

During the next semester after a student is place on Club Sport warning, the club member is only allowed to practice and travel to events that do not require an overnight stay. The club member will also be required to provide a mid-semester progress report signed by their professors to the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports. Upon satisfactory academic performance, the student will be permitted to continue participating.

If the mid-semester progress report is not satisfactory, the club member will no longer be able to participate in any capacity on a club team. This will serve as an opportunity for the club member to seek additional academic assistance to prevent moving to academic probation.

Club Sport Probation (Academic Probation)

An undergraduate student with 36 or more attempted hours with an institution GPA of less than 2.0 is placed on academic probationAcademic probation serves as a warning to students that their academic progress is not satisfactory, and that they should take steps to improve their academic performance to avoid suspension from the University. Academic probation is an indication of very serious academic difficulty which may result in suspension from the University.

Once a club member is placed on Club Sport probation, the club member will not be eligible to participate in any capacity on a Club Sport team until the Club Sport probation status has been removed.

GPA Review

In the middle of each semester, GPA’s will be checked. This will provide Club Sport officers, coaches, and affected players of their eligibility status with Club Sports.

Intercollegiate athletes must have clearance from their respective varsity coaches before participating. Team presidents should always check with the rules governing their national affiliations regarding this situation. All guidelines governing the Club Sport program are written to protect the rights and safety of each participant and are designed to provide fair and equal opportunity for all persons eligible to participate in team activities. Participation in the Club Sports program is completely voluntary; therefore, monetary rewards or scholarships shall not be promised or given to any player.
